Globe Telecom Gives Back to Frontliners through Shopee Bayanihan Program

It’s been more than a year into the global pandemic, and everyone’s lives have affected everyone tremendously. However, no group is more affected than frontliners who have been bravely leading the fight against the virus.

Since the onset of the virus outbreak, courageous frontliners have been tirelessly serving the country to treat the sick and try to contain the COVID-19 cases in the country. Recognizing their bravery and selfless acts as modern-day heroes, Globe Telecom partnered with Shopee Bayanihan to give back to frontliners in the country.

The uHoo Indoor Air Quality Monitor: life changing decisions come in small packages

In these unprecedented times, wearing a mask outdoors has been scientifically proven to help lessen the odds for contracting harmful viruses that can lead to sickness. However, once you return to the safety of your own home and remove that mask, you want to ensure that your indoor air is also safe.

We are not just talking about bacteria and viruses you may be bringing home – but the actual circulating indoor air can be a potential hotspot for bacteria and viruses to propagate. Add carbon monoxide from old leaky pipes, carcinogens from cooking indoors, mold that forms from damp towels left alone, and more. The traditional solution would be to buy a number of sensors scattered across the home, but as we have entered the age of the Internet of Things, there is, as what many will say, an app for that.

Resembling an insulated tumbler for hot drinks, the uHoo indoor air quality monitor is an interesting little device that measures the air quality of an enclosed space. The sleek device connects to your WiFi network and transmits data to a companion app (both iOS and Android compatible) to give real-time reporting on 9 different air quality parameters that include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), fine dust particles (PM2.5), ozone, and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) as well as other more traditional measurements for temperature, air pressure, and humidity.

Out of the box, uHoo wins the minimalist packaging award for being really tight – all it contains is a small welcome card, the actual device and a USB cable with a wall plug. Setting the device to sync with the local WiFi is done via the app, which you have to download from the Google Play Store or App Store. Once it connects to your WiFi, all you really need to do is wait for about a minute as it gathers data and that’s pretty much it!

As the device measures your air quality it also makes concrete recommendations to improve your air quality. The uHoo app comes with a patent-pending virus index that lists down acceptable thresholds for indoor air quality that helps you to minimize virus risk. For instance, the more people are inside a small space, CO2 levels increase as this is the air expelled by people. High CO2 levels indicate a lack of fresh air and also contribute to fatigue and migraine. Thus, it is important to introduce ventilation so that air can be circulated properly. This can be done by adjusting your home’s HVAC or by simply opening your windows or doors to let fresh air in.

It is important to note that the uHoo indoor air quality monitor is a tool to help you monitor, identify and alert you of any issues so that you can take the appropriate action. This information always keeps you informed so that you can make good decisions that have lasting effects on your overall quality of life.

uHoo is a Singapore-based leading global environmental health platform. It was founded in 2014 and has been growing rapidly since, tackling a $180B global air quality market. uHoo is present in over 40 countries, with strong demand from private homes, governments, schools, hospitals, hotels, malls, kitchens, and offices in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Bad spending habits revealed about savings in #PlsSaveMe Movement

In what could be the most honest and revealing ad yet about financial mismanagement, young professionals are breaking the taboo by talking about their lack of savings and their mishandling of money. From TV actors to corporate workers to call center agents, Filipinos are coming out of the closet with stories of their bad spending habits and a call for help in managing their finances in the latest ad for GCash.

“As a doctor, I can save lives. I just can’t save money,” says Erica. Meanwhile, Lourdes, a familiar actress in primetime TV series, says she often plays the character of a rich woman, but her wallet is empty in real life. Human Resources officer Nico also says he takes care of hardworking employees but has neglected to take care of his hard-earned money.

“I won P500,000 in a reality show and I spent it all in one week! Di ko nga alam bakit nila ako kinuhang endorser dito,” popular actor, host, and VJ Robi Domingo shares in the ad, which has had over 60,000 views since it was released on GCash’s official Facebook page on Oct. 3.

The ad highlights an ugly truth that has been covered up by all those beautiful YOLO and FOMO pictures on social media: 66% of Filipinos do not have savings. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has reported that only 35.2% of Filipino households had any savings at all from April-June this year.

“Let’s begin to change that. Share your story and use the hashtag #PlsSaveMe to join the movement,” the ad goes. As Domingo shared his shocking P500,000 confession on Twitter, other users shared stories of working for years and still being penniless.

“Not my first job but it is my first work na sobrang na-overwhelmed (sic) ako sa sweldo ko tho d sobrang laki. Nakatanggap ako ng 15k+ in 1 cut off and spent 10k of it in less than 5 days. I don’t even know where those (sic) money went lol. Now I’m jobless,” Yow, a netizen, tweeted in response to Domingo’s call to share #PlsSaveMe stories. “You know, I’ve been working for 4 years and 6 mos. on (sic) my current job and been “rumaraket” twice a week ever since. Yet 0 pa rin savings ko coz of my luhos,” Jera Gallero also said.

Many stories come from breadwinners who have been working for as long as 13 years but still have no savings because they give everything to their parents or spend their salaries on their siblings’ tuition. “OFW here. A decade abroad but still no savings. I didn’t buy expensive things for myself but I sent everything to my love ones (sic),” a woman who identifies herself as Hyun Jae said. Another netizen, Kat, says, “I always plan to save a small amount of money. It’s been years and it’s still a plan. Zero savings.”

As more and more people recognize the problem of financial mismanagement, GCash encourages others to join the movement to find solutions to the challenge of saving.

What’s your #PlsSaveMe story?

RELX encourages you to choose better alternatives to smoking

RELX, the no. 1 e-cigarette brand in Asia, is now available in the Philippines. Adult smokers now have the opportunity to ditch conventional cigarettes in favor of a better and safer alternative that is of world class quality at an affordable price.

The RELX starter kit (consisting of one device, a pod and a micro-cable) is priced at Php 1,599.00 at retail.

“RELX, as it develops future-forward solutions to the world’s one billion adult smokers, now offers to the Philippines’ 15 million adult smokers a better and safer alternative to cigarette smoking through its affordable yet world class product,” said Di Yang, RELX Director for Southeast Asia Business; in a press conference on September 20 (Friday) in Makati City.

RELX’s entry in the domestic e-cigarette business, Yang said, would also mean additional investment for the Philippines, including job generation for Filipinos.

“RELX hopes to contribute to the Philippines’ economic growth through the investment that we are bringing, including the employment that we will be generating,” he stressed. “The Philippines is a key market where we have and intend to continue investing very significantly. We will be opening retail outlets, appointing distributors, building up a strong local organization to run what we believe to be a very meaningful presence here,” Yang added.

The RELX executive disclosed that the Beijing-based company foresees at least 70-80% of the team members to be Filipinos in its Manila operation.

“We are also moving our global customer service to a business process outsourcing (BPO) in Manila. As our international business grows, the demand for BPO agents will increase too,” he pointed out.

During the press conference, Yang took the opportunity to air his company’s view on the current regulatory environment: “We welcome regulations to ensure that the industry adopts good practices that can benefit the country. We would like to have the opportunity to work with the Philippine government to develop a progressive regulatory framework that best reduce the longstanding negative impact that smoking cigarettes has had on the Philippines.”

He, however, lamented that Administrative Order 2019-0007 issued by the Department of Health (DOH) and the proposed measures in Congress to heavily tax e-cigarettes are counterproductive.

“When the new administrative order takes effect, e-cigarettes will effectively be much more heavily regulated and restricted than traditional cigarettes; including a flavor ban, a total advertising ban, and unnecessarily heavy licensing requirements down to the retail level,” Yang said.

“Some of the bills making their way through congress even push for highly unlevel taxations between different types of nicotine liquids that create highly unlevel playing fields not conducive for the industry at best, and at worst may prove unenforceable due to the development of new hybrid e-liquids,” he said.

Yang expressed hope the government and the industry stakeholders will be able to come up with a “win- win” solution.

“There are more than 1 billion smokers in the world today, and by WHO’s (World Health Organization) own projections, there will continue to be more than a billion smokers in the world by 2025. Vape as a product category has the potential to switch smokers from burning traditional cigarettes, which generate TAR and a host of harmful chemicals to a much better alternative,” he concluded.

Seven Awesome Ways to Empower Young Girls

For 20 years, The Powerpuff Girls have been on a mission to prove that girls rule. Now Cartoon Network is launching #Empowerpuff in the Philippines, an initiative that hopes to make a difference in the life of every Pinay.

Through #Empowerpuff, Cartoon Network will premiere a series of on-ground activities, local partnerships as well as online content to inspire Pinays to build their very own ‘ka-pow’ legacy and transform their communities. But before it officially kicks off, you can empower other young ladies in your community with these easy steps:

Encourage them to express their creativity

Creativity is meant to be expressed because it is a gift that is ever evolving. If you know someone who has a talent in creating things or making beautiful drawings, encourage them to hone their craft!

Say no to bullying!

Whether online or offline, bullying should not be tolerated. Lift each other up by saying good things that will help them become more driven and motivated.

Always be ready to help out

Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup may have their differences and fights, but they’re always there for their sisters. Whether with a big or small gesture, support goes a long way when it comes to empowering others. Watch out for the #Empowerpuff themed shirts by Merch By, so you can empower other girls one shirt at a time!

Spark up conversations

Another way to empower one another is to encourage conversation. Let your gal-pals know that they are remembered by perking up your group chats and sending them cool #Empowerpuff-themed Viber stickers starting this September 19.

Ride on to adventure

To empower others, you need to believe in yourself too. By stepping out of your comfort zone, going on adventures and meeting other people, you gain experiences that can make an impact on others. Visit different places and take advantage of every opportunity.

Teach each other things

Sharing is caring and it doesn’t only apply to material things like your baon.Talent, skills and knowledge are also valuable things that you can share and teach others. You never know; they might be encouraged to pay it forward.

Mingle with others

Empowered women never limit themselves. They go out of their comfort zone and mingle with others with whom they share the same passion. Events like It’s A Girl Thing (IAGT) are designed to empower girls and celebrate uniqueness. And, as Cartoon Network partners with IAGT on November 10, girls like you are surely going to have fun as you meet your fave women who wowed the world!

In addition to international personalities like the Merrel twins, there will also be guest appearances from local celebrity trailblazers like Anne Curtis, Yassi Pressman, Karylle, Jessy Mendiola and Megan Young.

Be empowered with #Empowerpuff! Stay tuned as Cartoon Network has a lot of surprises, cool prizes, and activities in store for you! 5 Ways to Teach Kids the Value of Saving

In this day and age when shopping is at one’s fingertips, it’s easy to lose control and end up with an ugly spending habit and a huge debt hole that can wipe out hard-earned savings. It becomes vital now more than ever that children are taught important money lessons so they can navigate through the lures of consumerism and make wise financial decisions later in life.

Here are five ways you can teach children how to have good fiscal habits:

  1. Highlight the importance of waiting

That princess dress that your kid badly wants may be cute on her, but don’t give in too easily. Instead, explain to your child that it costs money to be able to have it, and that she can use her hard-earned allowance to pay for it. Also, talk your child into waiting until tomorrow so she can make a more sensible financial decision. Emphasize the need to save now so you can spend later, like for a family trip or music lessons. This gives you an opportunity to impart lessons on impulse buying and instant gratification.

  1. Use a clear money jar to save

Children tend to be visual so they’d get the idea of money multiplying better if they see clearly what they put inside. While piggy banks will still get the message across, clear money jars are far more effective. You can have three jars—one labeled “spending” for small purchases like sweet treats, one for “saving” and one for “giving” or charity.

  1. Open a bank account

This is where all the cash from the savings money jar goes. Let your children join you when you open a bank account and deposit what they saved from the money jar. Or, if this is too tedious, as it often is, open a digital savings account instead. Mobile wallet GCash has a feature called GSave, which allows you to open and maintain a bank account with CIMB (a top international bank) straight from the GCash app. This is a simpler alternative that offers interest rate at 3% annually, much higher than in traditional banks. It also doesn’t require a minimum initial deposit to open an account or a maintaining balance to start growing your savings. Kids now are more tech-savvy than ever, so introducing them to the concept of mobile wallets and digital savings early on may be easier than you think. This will also set the tone for their financial skills and jumpstart the habit of saving larger amounts of money.

  1. Give commissions or allowances for chores

To clearly illustrate that money is earned and doesn’t grow on trees, give allowances or commissions for household chores accomplished. This will also teach children early on the value of hard work and spending wisely. But it’s important to note that such pays should be modest, not extravagant—just enough to incentivize children to perform their weekly duties. In this way, they also understand that basic chores require no payment and are part of family life.

  1. Set an example

Children are observant and they copy what adults do. To impart important financial lessons, model good spending habits which they will likely pick up when they grow older. The grocery store is a fertile ground for teaching the value of money. For instance, when making a purchase, compare prices and show them how they can save by buying the cheaper but quality products. Be prudent also when using the credit card as they might get the idea that there’s free unlimited money in there.
