Experience Singapore’s top attractions for kids right from your home

Being forced to stay at home doesn’t mean we stop exploring the world. Thanks to technology, the internet, and the initiative of some organizations, we’ve been able to watch concerts, musicals, and other international events through platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and more. Museums and exhibits across the globe have also begun hosting virtual tours to make art and culture easily accessible to anyone.

Singapore, a country known for its child-friendly destinations, has made its gamut of attractions that inspire creativity and a sense of wonder among the little ones accessible for discovery and learning online.

For one, the Singapore Tourism Board has released a drawing tutorial of its iconic character, Merli, to help kids create and learn more about the country’s representative symbol, the Merlion. And this is just one of the many other online activities that Singapore has made available for the entire family to enjoy and take advantage of these days.

From museums to works of nature, and more—Singapore is opening its virtual doors for your family’s enjoyment.

Art, Science, and more!

Keep the momentum going after the Merli drawing tutorial. Expose the young minds to more hands-on arts and crafts, and a museum experience at the same time.

Help your child discover ways to experiment, play and create with every day, recyclable materials easily found at home such as cardboard toilet rolls, and rubber bands. Playeum, a center in Singapore that champions children through play, holds a live, guided craft session every week. This is an ideal choice for regular play dates for the little ones. One can also give the usual story time a boost and twist, with some puppet play at home with DIY instructions from the group C!puppets.

Get them to know more about the Indian heritage and culture of Singapore through online jigsaw puzzles and charades, even, provided by the Indian Heritage Center. Or let the kids marvel in the space where art meets science: ArtScience Museum currently has limited time online offerings—from virtual tours to workshops and performances.

Love video games? It may not necessarily be a bad thing. Learning also takes place when kids play, and Sentosa has taken the island adventure in the popular Nintendo Switch game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so kids can get a glimpse of the exciting experience possible there.

Get around Singapore

If the virtual island experience piques their interest, then let them further explore!

Singapore’s famed awe-inspiring green space in the heart of the city, Gardens by the Bay, has launched #StayHomeWithGB, to allow people to still learn about the art of horticulture, along with other edutainment content that are perfect for parents looking for new things to introduce to their kids.

Meanwhile, Google Street View has also made it possible to carry-on sightseeing in the Lion City through the virtual tours of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Mount Faber Park, and MacRitchie Reservoir.

All these fun activities that Singapore makes available online are but a reflection of the many attractions the island nation has to offer. And even while we are in quarantine, there are still opportunities for kids to pursue creative and imaginative activities. In fact, it might be the best opportunity and time to bond and share precious moments together.

Manulife Philippines provides free insurance coverage for 25,000 delivery riders

As the community quarantine remains enforced in various parts of the country, Manulife Philippines has announced that it will extend its free insurance coverage* to 25,000 active two-wheel riders from foodpanda, Gogo Xpress, Shopee Xpress and Ninja Van worth P1.25 billion.

The free insurance coverage, which comes on the heels of Manulife providing P3 billion worth of free insurance coverage for Grab and Lalamove riders last month, will help protect the riders and their families, in the event of injury or death while on duty.

Since the start of the enhanced community quarantine, app-based delivery riders have been among the many brave frontliners that carry on with their duties amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Manulife Philippines recognizes the importance of these delivery partners, who bring food and other necessities to Filipinos, keeping everyone safe at home and businesses moving.

“It’s a privilege to be able to extend our free insurance coverage to even more delivery drivers, who help us remain safe at home while risking themselves,” said Richard Bates, President and CEO of Manulife Philippines. “By delivering essentials, they also help keep companies in business, and this insurance coverage is our way of recognizing our heroic frontliners and showing how we value the work they do.”

Foodpanda, Gogo Xpress, Shopee Xpress and Ninja Van commended their riders for their commitment to help in the movement of goods for both customers and businesses in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Our delivery riders alleviate the anxieties of both customers and SMEs by helping them reach each other in the most efficient and safest way possible. Manulife’s free insurance coverage for our riders rewards their sacrifices, and shows that their safety and protection are our priorities, too,” foodpanda, GoGo Xpress, Shopee Xpress and Ninja Van said in a joint statement. “It also affirms the kind of unity and support we can do for our community, so we can help protect each other when it matters the most,” they added.

Mondelez Philippines and Robinsons Easymart build recycled play area

Before the Enhanced Community Quarantine was implemented, Balumbato Elementary School in Quezon City welcomed a new play area for its students. This is no ordinary play area, however, as its structure was made using recycled plastic.

Plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental issues of late and various organizations have been stepping up to somehow address the problem in their own ways. This recently constructed play area shows that when properly disposed and recycled, plastic waste has further purpose and can be given new life.

What’s more, the play area was built in partnership with Robinsons Supermarket. In the latter part of 2019, Mondelez Philippines partnered with Robinsons Easymart for a social marketing campaign. For every purchase of selected Mondelez Philippines snack products, a portion went to the construction of the play area.

Says Robinsons Supermarket’s Daisy Lyn Go-Sy, Merchandising Director-Food 2 & 3, “Robinsons Supermarket is pleased to partner with Mondelez Philippines in reaching out to communities by way of this play area, which the children of Balumbato Elementary School can fully enjoy once they are able to go back to school. We hope that they will help create many beautiful moments of friendship, laughter and physical activity for them. This project is also in keeping with our partner’s mission to give joy through snack products and ours of health and wellness.”

Mindful Snacking and Sustainable Snacking

The Joy Schools is Mondelez Philippines’ flagship community program which started in 2011, focused on helping improve the nutrition of students through a 9-month feeding program. The program is one way Mondelez Philippines stays true to its purpose of empowering people to snack right, with the right snack, for the right moment, and made the right way.

For the past 9 years the Joy Schools program has been helping improve the nutrition of adopted students through a daily lunch feeding program. This, as Mondelez Philippines calls it, is their contribution to promoting Mindful Snacking–which translates to working with communities to promote nutrition education, access to fresh food and active play.

Their purpose of ‘snacking made right’ also includes encouraging Sustainable Snacking. “Sustainable Snacking for us means creating a future where people and planet thrive by creating resilient ingredient supply chains, reducing our environmental impact, and developing zero-net waste packaging,” shares Toff Rada, CGA Country Manager of Mondelez Philippines.

“With this dual purpose of Mindful and Sustainable Snacking, we decided to expand our Joy Schools program with the recycled play areas project. In this way we are able to contribute to students’ knowledge and practice on nutrition and encourage them to be part of protecting our environment.”

4th Joy Schools Recycled Play Area

Launched in August 2019, the Recycled Play Areas are slides, benches and sheds which have been built using ecobricks. These are plastic bottles stuffed full of used and shredded plastic bags or packaging. In the schools where they have been built, students have been encouraged to make their own ecobricks, and see their contributions serve a purpose with the recycled play areas.

Employees of Mondelez Philippines also contributed to the collection of ecobricks, with the four play areas able to recycle some 990 kilos of plastic. The three other schools are located in Paranaque City and another in Quezon City.

Moving forward, the Company aims to contribute more towards recycling plastic. At a time when most people stay at home, and conscious consumption is most prevalent, the idea of making ecobricks – or something new out of old materials – seems as fitting as ever.

While everyone’s at home, it’s also a great time to segregate waste so that recyclers will be able to utilize reusable packaging rather than having them end up in landfills.  Did you know that plastic that’s been contaminated with food and dirt cannot be recycled anymore? That’s why it’s important to segregate.

“Reducing the environmental impact of our packaging and tackling plastic waste are urgent priorities for us,” adds Rada. “Globally we have committed to make all our packaging recyclable and provide recycling information for consumers by 2025. Locally we have also signed a pledge, aiming that by 2030 we will have achieved zero net waste as a community, where plastic does not end up in nature. But this is not something we can do alone. We would like to encourage everyone to take this time to recycle, repurpose and segregate their waste. We should all come together for this particular issue, which is also important for our world.”

While the recycled plastic play area awaits the return of children, it stands as inspiration for the many wonderful things that can happen if groups work together to recycle and manage waste.

Simple tips for staying healthy and immune anytime

As the global pandemic caused by COVID-19 persists, it is most important to always keep your family’s health in check. With our attention refocused toward making good health a new way of life, it’s comforting to know that Watsons is here to help every mom every step of the way.

Here are a few recommendations from Watsons on what we can do at home to help keep your immunity strong and your family healthy:

Be active

Exercising has many known benefits such as helping us get fit, improving our mood and helping boost the health of our internal organs. But did you know that staying active also helps strengthen our immunity system?

Make time for exercise daily, even for at least 30 minutes to one hour. Go for exercises you can do with a group like dance or cardio workouts so you can involve the whole family. In our case, the workouts have to be kid-friendly. The exercises have to be fairly easy but still keep the kids entertained.

Here is one of the simple workout videos that I follow on Youtube:

Freestyle dancing to any song that you like also counts as a workout!

Eat right

These days, buying food and cooking it require ingenuity. Still, there are plenty of immunity-boosting foods that you can incorporate easily into your daily recipes, from vegetables such as carrots and broccoli to aromatics like garlic and ginger. Additionally, you can also end your meals with a warm cup of comfort courtesy of Nutrabliss by Watsons Tea

Get quality sleep

Did you know that getting enough sleep helps increase our defense against sickness? Now that we have more time on our hands, we can sometimes easily sacrifice rest for activities such as binge-watching or scrolling through our gadgets up to the wee hours of the morning.

To help avoid this, make sure to set a proper time for sleeping. Manage the household’s schedule and make room for most of your activities in the morning, so the family can sleep soundly at night.

Take vitamins regularly

Some natural sources of vitamins may be hard to come by, considering how difficult it is to buy food. You can count on taking vitamins to strengthen your family’s immunity. We all know Vitamin C is critical for family members of all ages. Pro tip? Stock up on your supply with Watsons Generics Ascorbic Acid.

But Vitamin C isn’t the only vitamin that can keep you healthy, Enervon Activ Soft Gel—rich in Zinc, Vit. A, C, and E—helps boost immunity and promote healthy hair and skin. Myra E 400IU, on the other hand, is also rich with Vitamin E to help fight cell damage.

For the kids, let’s help support their growth not just in height but in strength with Growee Syrup or Cherifer PGM with Zinc capsules. I make sure the whole family takes their vitamins in the morning during breakfast.

Top up with supplements

Like vitamins, supplements are a great way to give your health an extra boost. You can easily rely on taking supplements to help provide the nutrients you need on top of maintaining a healthy diet. Given that going back outdoors could mean exposure to environmental factors that may cause damage to our skin and body, make sure you keep that healthy glow from within with supplements like MET Tathione, NU Essence Collagen, and Organique Acai Juice.

You can also keep your defenses up with supplements that harness the power of natural ingredients such as MX3 capsules and Watsons Generics Malunggay + Mangosteen

Preparedness is key to protection, so make sure you have your health essentials so you’re always ready. I always have Lola Remedios, Strepsils, and Prosource Extra Virgin Coconut Oil at home.

Globe’s VoLTE & VoWiFi for voice calls is now available

Globe is launching its Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) service along with Voice Over WiFi (VoWiFi) that aims to improve voice call experience for its customers. These services will initially be available in NCR and to selected customers on May 14, 2020.

With the VoLTE technology in place, Globe customers, instead of relying on the older 3G to handle their calls, can now enjoy the advantages of a 4G LTE network. Calls made over VoLTE are clearer because of a high-definition voice quality, especially if both parties are on VoLTE.

VoLTE also allows for faster time to connect compared to the usual calls via 2G and 3G. The time it takes to set up a call is faster by one to five seconds, which can be vital during emergency situations. Another benefit of VoLTE is the simultaneous use of voice and data. As both can now run on the LTE network, multi-tasking becomes a breeze and sharing information from the web or apps while on a call is now made possible.

VoWiFi or WiFi calling, on the other hand, extends network coverage in areas with poor signal quality allowing calls to be routed over Wi-Fi instead of a 2G/3G/LTE network, without the need for any app. Subscribers can use WiFi calling to make and receive important calls as long as they have good Wi-Fi connection.

Similarly, overall voice call experience is better with WiFi calling with customers also enjoying the benefits of high-definition quality calls and faster call connection time.

“The VoLTE service will allow us to maximize our LTE network resources providing our customers with seamless and better communication experience. We understand that the people’s need to be constantly connected have heightened, especially during this period of community quarantine and Globe is steadfast in its commitment to continuously improve our services,” Albert de Larrazabal, Globe Chief Commercial Officer said.

When making a VoLTE or a WiFi call, customers’ mobile data will not be consumed. A subscriber only needs an LTE signal to make a VoLTE call while WiFi calling only needs a WiFi network. More importantly, no additional charges will be made on top of regular voice call rates or subscriptions when using the VoLTE and WiFi calling.

VoLTE and WiFi calling will initially be available to selected Globe Postpaid customers including business customers, with supported devices from Samsung, Huawei and some Nokia models. VoWiFi, on the other hand, is available to Samsung mobile devices.

For more information about VoLTE and WiFi calling, please visit THIS SITE.

Living the new normal at home with LG

In just a few days, the ECQ will be shifting to GCQ in most parts of the country. During this time, we will be in some sort of middle ground between how we are living now during the quarantine and how we were in before this crisis happened.

Honestly, I personally think that we won’t be going back to the the old normal anytime soon. At least not until a vaccine is finally approved for mass use. We will all have to accept that we will all be living under a “new normal” scenario, where public gatherings and contact with people outside our homes would still be either prohibited or limited to a certain degree.

As the world braces itself for the inevitability of the new normal, adaptability and inter-connectivity become more important than ever. Work versatility and efficiency amidst the crisis is paramount. Working from home affords you a lot of freedom, but the responsibility of being productive falls solely on you and you alone.

One of the best things about being able to work from home is having the ability to multitask. Even if you’re juggling a dozen online meetings during the day, small windows of opportunity opens up periodically where you can squeeze in a chore or two.

With LG Electronics’ wide array of smart home appliances, multitasking comes easy. LG’s line of ThinQ Washing Machines, for example, give you the convenience of fuss-free loads with just
a push of a button.

Aside from its simplicity and ease of use, LG’s washing machines lets you combat allergens and germs with the power of TrueSteam™. The Allergy Care cycle uses water and heat to create a super-disinfecting steam that sanitizes clothing while still being gentle on it. This reduces 99.9% allergens, such as dust mites that can cause allergy or respiratory issues.

LG’s proprietary Advanced Inverter Technology with DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™ also provides you the flexibility of choosing between a higher level of energy efficiency or shorter time than ever, which is perfect if you just want to squeeze another load in between Zoom meetings.

LG’s ThinQ technology also allows you the freedom to balance daily tasks through the use of a simple smartphone app. Through LG’s SmartThinQ technology, you can even start that load while you’re in a meeting through the use of a smartphone. Not just that, you can check the remaining time, switch off the machine, and more through the convenience of one App. LG’s artificial intelligence also evolves with you.

The more you use your smart appliances, the smarter they get by remembering usage habits to better anticipate your needs.

As we slowly transition into the new normal, having home appliances that integrate seamlessly into one’s lifestyle is a godsend. LG Electronics, with all of their cutting-edge innovations, are able to tread the fine line between technology and convenience, giving consumers more flexibility in navigating their daily lives.

Each variety of grape is extremely versatile in its taste – they can be deliciously enjoyed on their own and best enjoyed whole – as well as able to be added to a range of dishes. Considered nature’s candy, Australian Table Grapes are a versatile snack or sweet and crisp addition to any recipe, making them the ideal fresh fruit for all.

The horticulture industry in Australia prides itself on the idyllic growing conditions Australia is famous for – warm, dry summers, and deep, rich soils provide the perfect environment for Australian growers to produce world class table grapes.

Every grape grown by Australian Table Grape farmers is from an established second or third generation family-owned farm located in pristine rural Australia. The techniques, knowledge and passion for growing and carefully selecting the grapes has been perfected over many years and passed down through the generations of families. Using this expertise, these farmers are proud to work hard producing more than 240,000 tons of the best quality fruit from their farms and exporting 60% of their top quality produce around the world.

As Australia is the closest southern hemisphere supplier to the Philippines, Australian Table Grapes found in store are guaranteed to be the freshest in the market. The whitish bloom on the skin of each grape is another key indicator of freshness, proving they’re delivered directly from the farm to your table.

Maxi-Peel bridges frontliners and their loved in new video

With the many challenges we face everyday–especially now that there is a global health pandemic going on–a call for encouragement and a message of gratitude can go a long, long way.

Even though nothing can ever beat the comfort of being at home with their families, we can help boost the morale of our brave frontliners by continuously expressing our appreciation for their hard work and sacrifices.

Maxi-Peel has taken the initiative to become the bridge between our modern heroes and their loved ones who they might not have seen over the past weeks or maybe even months. Through the online video Gaganda Muli Ang Bukas, individuals whose moms, dads, relatives, and even friends are able to reach out to their loved ones who are continuously fighting for a better tomorrow.

The video offered an opportunity for these people to send our modern day heroes messages and reminders to take a rest when they can, to also look out for themselves, and to express how much they are missed.

Moreover, through a short speech, these loved ones were able to share the pride and happiness of knowing that their family member is able to help a significant amount of those who are in need.

Hope has always been something that Maxi-Peel believed in, and just like our brave frontliners and their families who remain strong as they keep fighting, Maxi-Peel also urges everyone to not give up with the hashtag #WagMongIsukoAngLaban.

The brand’s encouraging message of hope has always stood as an inspiration for women across the Philippines even before the pandemic happened. By bringing hope to consumers who may have felt bullied or dejected in the past because they lack the confidence to face the world, have found a partner in Maxi-Peel to give them a brighter outlook.

Now, Maxi-Peel is doing the same for the entire country as it pushes for encouragement in these trying times.

What to do with kimchi besides eating it as a side dish

Who else is on #Koreantine these days? I know I am!

(Koreantine: enjoying all things Korean culture–from kdramas and movies, to food and music–to cope with quarantine blues)

From binge-watching Korean dramas and movies on Netflix and Viu, to listening to BTS and crushing hard on Hyun Bin and Park Seo Joon, I’ve been swept by the Korean wave to the point that I now crave for Korean dishes everyday.

It’s just my luck that I recently learned about the health benefits of my favorite Korean side dish: kimchi. According to science, fermented fruits and vegetables, like my favorite cabbage kimchi, are good for boosting the immunity system–something that is very important, especially with COVID-19 going around.

Kimchi, apparently, is rich in probiotics and prebiotics that help stimulate the immune system by inhibiting toxins and stopping bad bacteria from infesting the body. Other good sources of probiotics and prebiotics are eggplant, asparagus, bananas, garlic, onions, and nuts.

While I love my kimchi, not everyone seems to be very fond of its taste. Most people I know who refuse to eat kimchi either find it too spicy or too sour, and that’s because they only know to eat it straight out of the pack. But here are other ways to eat kimchi and make it more enjoyable for the whole family.

Kimchi Fried Rice with Vienna Sausage

Kimchi Fried Rice

Fried rice or sinangag is a common dish served in Filipino cuisine. We usually eat it for breakfast using leftover rice from dinner and pair it with practically any easy-to-cook viand like tapa, tocino, longganisa, or daing na bangus.

Typically, we cook our sinangag with just garlic and/or shallots. If we’re feeling fancy, we make it Chinese-style by adding some minced carrots, peas, and scrambled egg.

For kimchi fried rice, the process is also pretty simple. Stir-fry some minced garlic, ginger, and white onions in oil. Add chopped kimchi and cooked rice (best to use overnight rice). For every cup of rice, I use about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of chopped cabbage kimchi.

Mix everything well and season with a little bit of soy sauce and gochujang chili paste if you want to make it spicier. Finish off with minced green onion and a few drops of sesame oil.

Pair it up with any viand of your choice or for added Korean feels, go for Spam and Korean egg rolls.

Kimchi Pancake (kimchi-buchimgae or kimchi-jeon)

Perfect for a light breakfast or a satisfying snack, kimchi pancake is a healthy and easy-to-make dish that you can enjoy with the whole family.

The cooking process is pretty similar to your standard pancake, but instead of adding milk, you use kimchi and its tasty juice.

Start by sifting 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and about 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a bowl. Add one large egg and two cups of cold water and mix. Toss in 1/4 cup of chopped green onions, two cups of chopped cabbage kimchi, and 1-2 tablespoons of kimchi juice (depends on how spicy you want it).

You can make one large pancake on a 9-inch frying pan or four to six small pieces (two tablespoons of mixture per pancake) with this mixture. Fry pancakes in a little bit of oil (I use vegetable oil).

Serve with dipping sauce made with 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 4 tablespoons soy sauce (I use Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce, but it’s better if you can buy a Korean branded soy sauce from a Korean grocery store), 4 tablespoons water, and 4 tablespoons rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

Kimchi Tofu Stew (kimchi sundubu jjigae)

If you’ve watched the Kdrama Itaewon Class on Netflix, then chances are you’d be craving for the signature dish served at Park Saeroyi’s hip Danbam Pub. Kimchi tofu stew is actually a popular dish in Korea and served in most Korean restaurants here in the Philippines.

Now, there are actually create different varieties of kimchi tofu stew. You can cook it with beef strips (woosamgyup), pork belly strips or bacon, chopped chicken breast or thigh meat, seafood (shrimp, crab meat, or clams), or mushroom (I like shiitake for this).

But for the basic stew, all you need are the following staple ingredients: cabbage kimchi, gochujang chili paste, tofu (you can use either soft or firm), chicken stock, egg, white onion, garlic, ginger, green onion, soy sauce, sesame oil, red chili flakes, and salt and pepper to taste. Since this dish is best served hot, you may want to invest in a Korean clay pot, which you can also use to cook other Korean dishes.

To cook, heat up your clay pot on the stove and saute minced garlic, minced ginger, and chopped onion in some sesame oil. If you’re cooking with meat, seafood, or mushroom, this would be the perfect time to toss them in. Add a teaspoon of soy sauce and gochujang chili paste before putting your chicken stock. Wait for it to boil before adding your chopped kimchi and firm tofu cubes, if that’s what you’re using.

Boil for about 2-3 minutes and season with salt, pepper, and red chili flakes if you want it to be more spicy. If you prefer to use soft tofu, now is the time to add it before topping it with raw egg and some freshly chopped green onions. Drizzle with a little bit more sesame oil and serve right away while the stew is still simmering. Best eaten with steamed white rice.

Another option is to add grated cheese into the mix to give it a more flavorful taste.

Kimchi Ramyun Noodle Soup

This recipe is basically a carbon copy of the kimchi stew, but instead of pairing it with rice, this already comes with carbohydrates in the form of ramyun noodles.

You don’t need a lot of ingredients for this dish since it uses ready-to-cook ramyun noodles, which you can easily buy in any supermarket nowadays. I prefer using the Nongshim brand Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup.

Like the kimchi stew, start this recipe by heating up your clay pot on the stove and sauteing minced garlic, minced ginger, and chopped onion in some sesame oil. I like adding chicken or beef to this, so I also saute the meat in along with the aromatic ingredients. Then I add water and the seasoning and dried vegetable packets that come with the ramyun pack.

Once it boils, add the noodles, and chopped kimchi. Cook for about 2 minutes and add soft tofu and/or raw egg and chopped green onionsbefore removing the pot from the heat. You may also add some cheese.

Can’t find shin ramyun at your local grocery store? You may also use any ready-to-cook noodle soup. I’ve tried using Lucky Me Chicken Na Chicken Mami once and it tasted just fine.

There are many more ways to cook and eat kimchi, but so far these are the recipes that I have personally tried and swear by. I hope you give one of these a try so you can also add something healthy to your diet.
